Histology and Histochemistry Laboratory
- Services -
The following dyeing techniques are applied in tissue sections:
- Hematoxylin & eosin (tissues in general)
- Masson's trichrome (muscle and collagen)
- Mallory's trichrome (conjunctive tissue)
- PAS Alcian blue (acid and neutral mucopolysaccharides)
- Peryodic Acid-Schiff PAS (glucogen, mucins)
- Feulgen (DNA, collagen and conjunctive tissue)
- Toluidine blue (mucins)
- Oily red (fat)
- Sudan IV (neutral fat)
- Sudan black (triglycerides, phospholipids, cholesterol esters)
- Ninhydrin-Schiff (proteins, amino groups)
The laboratory has the following equipment:
- Leica RM 2025 and RM 2155 rotation microtomes for paraffin and resin sections
- MICROM HM 505N cryostat for freezing and cutting frozen sections
- Millipore incubator
- VWR Scientific incubator
- COLE PARMER oven
- OHAUS scale
- 2 HISTOEMBEDDER Leica paraffin embedding systems.
- Olympus BX41 Microscope for bright field and phase contrast
- Olympus BX51 Fluorescence microscope
- IMAGE-PRO PLUS Olympus-Media Cybernetics Image analysis system
The laboratory offers technical support for setting up new histochemical and immune histochemical techniques where infrastructure possibilities are taken into account.
Conditions for delivering samples:
- Tissue samples must be adequately fixed or preserved according to the recommended protocol for the technique applied for and delivered to the laboratory duly labeled.
- The time needed to attend a service is in function of the number of samples. It is necessary to agree previously on a delivery date with the Responsible technician in charge of the laboratory for an adequate programming.
Sample reception is from Monday through Friday from 8 to 15:00 h.
