CIBNOR Master’s and Doctoral Programs are registered in the National Graduate Study Program (PNP) [acronym in Spanish] of Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT – National Council for Science and Technology) with top level category. Therefore, Mexican students accepted in a graduate program at CIBNOR may apply for CONACYT scholarships. Detailed information can be checked on CONACYT Esta liga abre una nueva ventana. Paperwork for these scholarships is made through the Financial Aid Department of CIBNOR Director's Office of Graduate Studies.

Candidate Selection

  • Mexican nationality or permanent residence in Mexico;
  • Minimum grade point average of 8.0 [1 to 10 point scale, equivalent to 3.0 in the USA] in the immediate level previous to the one applied for;
  • Acceptance to and proposal for the intended graduate program;
  • Recipients should aim to obtain a higher degree than the previous one.

The scholarship includes::

  • Payment for monthly maintenance

    DOCTORATE 6.0 S.M.1 36 months
    1 Minimum wage in force in Mexico City
  • Medical service with coverage for the scholarship recipient and his or her economic dependents is provided by Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (ISSSTE) [State health care provider], during the period of their graduate studies.

Required documents

  • CONACYT scholarship application with a front-view ID photo;
  • Official certificate of studies providing evidence of minimum grade average of 8 or higher [1 to 10 point scale, equivalent to 3.0 in U.S.A.] obtained in the previous immediate level;
  • Copy of the degree or certificate of the degree examination previous to the one applied for;
  • Letter of release or regularization of previous debt in case the applicant has been a CONACYT scholarship recipient;
  • In case of foreign applicants, copy of immigration document, FM2 immigrant or permanent resident;
  • Copy of birth certificate, official ID with applicant's photo and signature (voter registration card/document, passport or military service in force), copy of CURP [code of population registry], and  letter of immigrant status, citizenship, or residence if applicable;
  • Copy of marriage certificate, birth certificates of spouse and children if applicable.

The formal process includes the signing of the documents that establish commitments of both parties (scholarship recipient and CONACYT). Granting of scholarships for national graduate studies is subject to budget availability determined for that effect by CONACYT.

Foreign applicants

Foreign applicants may choose to apply for the scholarships offered by the Mexican Government through the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE Esta liga abre una nueva ventana) [Ministry of Foreign Affairs] to carry out graduate studies (master’s, doctoral, and specialization). Scholarships are granted up to a year. In the case of master and doctoral studies, scholarships can be extended after an evaluation according to the study plans and programs of the Mexican academic institutions.

The scholarship paperwork shall be performed in the Mexican Embassy in the applicant’s country of origin within the specified period of the call issued by the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores every year. Detailed information of this call can be checked on the SRE webpage.

Other scholarships

The Organization of American States (OEA Esta liga abre una nueva ventana) [acronym in Spanish] offers scholarships for graduate and research studies, for university studies in the specialty area, and for short and specialized training in education institutions and training centers in member states and permanent observers. For more information those interested should contact offices of public liaison, the appropriate office of OAS in their countries of origin, or contact the Educational Portal of the Americas

The Mutis Scholarship Program announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECI) is another option to carry out doctoral, master’s, and specialization studies in universityies and higher education centers in Latin America and in Portugal (graduate studies).
