Research

Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas del Noroeste, S. C., CIBNOR performs a wide array of biological studies and research, paying special attention to four main fields, which are:

AQUACULTURE

Aquaculture

Aquaculture represents the food industry of major growth at world level (around 10% pa.). This is why we foresee that in a few years, it will strengthen as one of the main activities for food production and employment in our country.

Because 94% of the aquaculture production comes from the northwestern part of the country, CIBNOR location is ideal to attend to the demands of the industry. Research (basic and applied) is performed and directed to solve problems in the industry and to propose strategies to diversify production through the development of culture technologies and transfer to the productive sector.

AGRICULTURE IN DRY LAND AREAS

Dry Lands

The agriculture and livestock sector confronts problems due to extreme conditions in arid and semi-arid areas, such as high solar radiation, water resource, brackish water, and recurrent drought periods in Mexico.

In CIBNOR we develop sustainable management systems for culture irrigation of key species to develop agriculture in Northwest Mexico, including horticultural species, forage, fruit trees, halophytes, and desert and organic plants with local, national, and international marketing potential

FISHERIES ECOLOGY

Fisheries Ecology

Fisheries in Mexico have a wide economic growth margin that derives from their backward state. A great part of this production comes from the Gulf of California, considered as one of the most productive ocean areas in the world.

Fisheries Ecology Research at CIBNOR focuses on basic and applied research. It contributes to national fisheries development, based on sustainability and creation of wealth, identification of verifiable resources capable of increasing national catch, and conservation of marine biodiversity with the minimum effect on Mexican marine ecosystems.

ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING AND CONSERVATION

Environmental Planning

At CIBNOR, environmental planning and conservation are dealt through directed research to determine the effects of human activities in biological systems. This information allows ways of making human activities compatible with conservation and management of natural resources.

Likewise, the information obtained on biological diversity of Northwest Mexico helps to generate an integral diagnosis on the potential use of natural resources, particularly in B.C.S.. It also helps to determine the environmental factors that favor the presence of species of interest, as well as human and natural threats that affect them.
