Marine Dinoflagellate Collection
Strain distribution, deposit, and shelter procedure
CODIMAR represents the first collection in its type in Mexico and we intend
to make it well-known as a reference collection at international level for the
study of harmful dinoflagellates. The collection is non-profit, but
a permanent income of economic resources for maintanence and growth will be required. This is the
reason why strains have an economic value.
We also reserve the right to restrict strain distribution of those which are
subject to CIBNOR investigation, in the understanding that they will be
available once research work has concluded and the results have been published.
Restriction information of the strains under this modality shall be indicated in
the strain list.
Application for CODIMAR biological material or for shelter shall be subject,
with no distinction, to the following regulations:
APPLICATIONS FOR STRAINS
- Persons interested in iCODIMAR biological material should address the CODIMAR curator (

);
- The formats for strain application
should be received by fax +52 (612) 125 3625 or by electronic mail;
- Strains are available for national and Latin American academic sector for$100 US dollars + shipping. For other foreign institutions strains shall have a cost of $110 US dollars + shipping;
- If the application is about toxic harmful strains, a guarantee document from the
applying institution should be integrated to certify that strains will only be
used for research and with all the safety and scientific ethical measures;
- Instructions to pay for stains shall be sent by electronic mail to the applicant once the
application is received and evaluated. If the applicant requires an estimate, it
shall be sent by electronic mail;
- Once the cost of the requested strains is paid and the deposit proof is sent, 10-20
working days will be required to ship the strains by messenger service and/or deliver
personally as specified in the application format;
- All strains are maintained in liquid medium, and thus shall be sent in triplicate in
plastic containers with screw top and packaged in thermal containers to minimize
abrupt temperature changes. A delivery format
that includes general data of the strain and condition in which it grew shall be
attached. It is difficult to guarantee strain survival during transfer
(especially those that have unstable growth). Therefore we suggest using air
messenger service or establish contact with colleagues or friends who will
travel to La Paz and can transfer the strains rapidly when they return. In this
last case, shipping expenses shall not be included, but the name of the person
and date the strains will be picked up should be informed previously. The
strains shall be handed out to the person after showing identification and proof
of payment;
- It is strictly forbidden to resell, redistribute, or donate the strains acquired
from CODIMAR to third parties
.
- Products generated by the use of strains, should indicate origin and general information
of the strain (including code and person who isolated it) with credits to
CODIMAR of Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas del Noroeste, S. C.;
- Patent creation with CODIMAR strains is strictly prohibited.
STRAIN SHELTER OR DONATION
- Microalgal strains which are donated or deposited should be available to the scientific
community and should be organisms of scientific interest;
- Send the "CODIMAR-shelter"
duly completed to the Collection curator, who shall be in charge of analyzing
the feasibility of the application in a period no longer than 10 days;
- If the state of the stain does not agree with the description indicated in the
shelter application format, paperwork shall be automatically cancelled
.
