Project: Biodiversity and conservation of land and water ecosystems

Principal Researcher: Dr. Aurora Breceda Solís Cámara

The study of the biodiversity of a region involves analyzing the evolution and biogeographical processes of the species that are found in it; it is a necessary step to know the correct working order of the ecosystems.

In order to better understand evolutionary ecology data of behavioral variability, competition, predation, mutualism or parasitism relationships, it is required to know the diversity of the species that are involved, their evolution, and adaptation to the environment. Likewise, it is a priority to know the richness of the ecosystem species when the objectives are their conservation and preservation.

It is not possible to preserve what is not known nor is it possible to use natural resources rationally and sustainably without knowledge. Such knowledge promotes the best recommendations to define the areas of biological diversity conservation to avoid conflicts of interest and to rationalize consumables for their establishment.

Morevover, the environmental norm also requires this type of information that allows implementing strategies based on impact studies and on species included in the Mexican norm NOM-059-ECOL-2001.

The objectives of this project include studying biodiversity and the good working order of the ecosystems to contribute to their conservation and maintenance; generating information on the biological, ecological, and management aspects of the species found in the official list of protected species (NOM-059-ECOL-2001), as well as those that are endemic, hunting and ecologically relevant species.

We also intend to obtain information on the complexity of interspecific relationships that keep the good working order of the ecosystems and on the anthropogenic variables that affect them.

It is required to perform a diagnosis of the situation of the relevant habitats (desert areas unique to the peninsula of Baja California and adjacent islands, as well as oases, mangroves, reefs, extreme environments) and make conservation or management recommendations according to the threats.
