Project: Risk of exceeding points of reference of biological-economic limitations in fisheries of small pelagic fish: a bioeconomic and ecosystemic approach

Monterrey sardine fishery is one of
the most important in Northwest Mexico. Historically,
the populations of this resource have been characterized by showing great
fluctuations in their abundance, including collapsing in some regions of their
geographical distribution. Up to now, the causes of these fluctuations are
little known, which makes management of this resource difficult. It is therefore
imperative to study this species integrally and perform a bioeconomic
analysis of this fishery with an ecosystemic approach

| Project: Monitoring a restoration program
of coral reef affected by the tank ship Lázaro Cárdenas II and reef
communities of the Loreto Park area in Baja California Sur |
 |
Principal Investigator: Dr. Eduardo Francisco Balart Páez
Participant(s): M.S. Horacio Bervera León , Dr. Juan Antonio De Anda Montañez , M.S. Lucia Campos Dávila , Biol. Alejandra Mazariegos Villarreal , Dr. Irma Olguín Espinoza , Dr. Alfredo Ortega Rubio , Juan José Ramírez Rosas , Dr. Elisa Serviere Zaragoza |

This project started after the PEMEX tank ship Lázaro Cárdenas II was
stranded in a reef area near Isla Espíritu Santo, B.C.S., destroying close to one
hectare of coral. After an initial stage of
damage diagnosis determining urgent cleaning measures and restoring, in collaboration with PROFEPA, we
finally reached the objective of this project, which is the monitoring phase of
the restored coral reef system. The project pursues to determine the tendency
toward recovery, or not, of the impacted area and after having restored it in a
period of 5 years. For this purpose, we used two approaches: structural and
functional... |

Project: Identifying fishery stocks of hake and cod off the coasts of Baja California through genetic markers
|
 |
Principal Investigator: Dr. Francisco Javier García de León
Participante(s): Dr. Ricardo Vázquez Juárez , Dr. Eduardo Francisco Balart Páez |
|
Hake and black cod are fish that inhabit deep waters, and in Mexico these
resources are considered potential due to the lack of fleet for their capture.
With mainly coastal fishing, Mexico
has not yet committed to increase exploitation of resources in deep waters,
which occupy an area of almost 98% of the exclusive economic zone. Hake and
black cod are captured occasionally in the coasts of Baja California by means of fishing promotion permits. As a consequence there are few scientific bases that allow their sustainable management... |
